Statement from CAPN on recent issues of racism

Dear colleagues,

Along with many of you, we have watched the events of the past week unfold in the United States, events which are compounding an already challenging time. We want to acknowledge firmly and explicitly that while the issue of anti-Black racism is at the forefront in the US, we cannot ignore that this reality exists here in Canada, and right in our own community.

Violence and discrimination against Black, Indigenous, and racialized peoples is embedded in all aspects of our Canadian society which unfortunately includes the health-care system. We have work to do. CAPN values and is strengthened by the diversity in our community and we are well suited to serve as a role model.

Addressing the issue of racial inequality is on all of us. It is our collective accountability not just to identify as anti-racist, but to do the work. Demonstrating through our words, actions, and behaviours, that we will not tolerate acts of racism in our community is the only way to effect positive, meaningful change. Please take a moment to think about your own position, what privilege you may have, and ways that you can make a difference. We are hopeful that together as a community, this issue will continue to be acknowledged as change will not happen alone..

Join us in acknowledging George Floyd, one of the many victims whose lives have been lost or irrevocably altered by systemic racism. We are deeply saddened that it has taken the death of yet another human life to move our collective conversation to a level that we hope may bring us closer to a more peaceful, equitable society.

Toronto Complement Conference 2024

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the organizing committee, we are excited to welcome you to the 4th Toronto Complement Conference (TCC), which will be held in Toronto, ON on November 29 - 30, 2024.

Over the past two decades complement research has seen a breathtaking development, and progress related to complement-mediated diseases has resulted in life-transforming advancements in patient management. Nevertheless, research and clinical translation thereof are still only at their beginnings, and there is a tremendous opportunity for education and learning in the complement field. In response to this development, we launched the new international Toronto Complement Conference (TCC) in 2020, aiming to gather scientists, clinicians, and allied health professionals from North America and all over the world to discuss the latest topics in the complement field-in science and in the clinical arena.

For TCC 2024 we once again composed an exciting program with stellar faculty being internationally recognized for topics of great interest including TMA, C3G, and novel treatments. We are also offering an exciting event in the form of a Young Investigators Forum as well as the Pharma & Biotech Innovations Session where healthcare companies will have an opportunity to present their research and development in the complement space.

Welcome to TCC 2024 - we hope you will join use and enjoy the conference!

With our best wishes,

Christoph Licht and Chris Patriquin

Our current initiatives involve medication access and formulary fairness for pediatric nephrology patients. We are aware that other issues that come up that require our voice to be heard.  If there are issues from a patient or health care provider perspective, please contact us using the following advocacy request form.
